Switch tax categories on, add one category per rate you charge, and choose the default.
A tax category is a named rate, for example Standard at 15% or Zero-rated at 0%. Create one for each rate you charge.
The menu link Shop › Tax Categories shows once tax and tax categories are both on.
Go to Shop › Settings › Tax Settings.
Turn on Enable Tax and, under Tax Category Settings, Enable Tax Category. Select Save Settings.
The same two switches are the Tax and Tax categories cards in Shop › Features. See Turn features on.
Three tiles at the top of Tax categories tell you where you stand:

| Tax is off | Bills show no tax. Select Turn on Enable Tax |
| One rate for everything | Categories exist but are not used yet. Select turn on Enable Tax Category |
| No default chosen | Products without a tax category need one. Select Choose the default |
Select Add tax category. On an empty page, pick Standard rate, Zero-rated or Another rate.
Select Create tax category.
Shops in India also see How it's shown on invoices, with one box per part such as CGST and SGST. The parts should add up to the rate; the form tells you when they do not. See GST for shops in India.
Select Tax settings on the page.
Under Tax Category Settings, choose a Default Tax Category, then select Save Settings.
Next, give your products a tax category.
Select Edit on a row to change it. Orders already placed keep the rate they had.
Delete is offered only for an unused category. A category that is the default, or that products or product categories use, shows In use instead. Choose another default or move those products first.
