Create or update many categories from a CSV file, with their pictures, and download your categories as a file.
The Tools menu on Catalogue › Categories has three tools that work together: an export, an image uploader and an import.
Keep these names in the first row.
| Column | Required | Allowed values | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
ID | No | Empty for a new category. Keep the ID from an export to update that category | 123 |
Name | Yes | The category name. Also used to find the category when there is no ID | Fruits |
Image | No | File name of an uploaded image | fruits.jpg |
Icon | No | File name of an uploaded icon | fruits-icon.png |
Is active | No | 1 shown to customers, 0 hidden. Fill every row: an empty cell hides the category | 1 |
This file does not say which category sits inside which. For that, use the category tree import.
Select Tools › Export categories, then Create the CSV file. The file is made in the background.
It appears under Past exports, with one row per category. Open the run and select the file.
Name each picture after its category, for example fruits.jpg.
Select Tools › Upload images in bulk. Drop the pictures on the box and select Upload images. Pictures can be JPG, PNG, GIF, SVG or WebP, up to 5 MB each.
The page lists what was just uploaded, with Copy name on each and Copy all names. Paste them into the Image or Icon column of your file.
Select Tools › Import categories.
Drop or select the CSV, up to 10 MB.
Select Upload and check. Download sample CSV (3) gives you a file with two example rows; the columns are listed on the right (4).
Check before importing shows each row with what will happen:
| Tag | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Updates, with the category's name | The row matched a category by ID or by name |
| New | A category will be created |
| Skipped | The row has no name and no known ID |
| not uploaded, under an image or icon | That file name is not uploaded yet. Upload it first |
Select Start import, or Discard to drop the file. The run appears under Past imports with how many categories it created and updated.
If you leave the check page, the import page shows Check your file with Check and import and Discard file. You cannot upload another file until you start or discard this one.
For one category, it is quicker to open it and drop a picture on its form.
