Before you start

Cost and margin tracking must be on under Shop › Features, and reports must be part of your package.

Who can use this

Shop owner, Shop Manager, Shop Product Manager

Gross margin compares what customers paid for items with the cost price those items had when they were sold.

Who sees it

Three things decide this, one after the other.

The Reports menu. Your shop is approved, reports are in your package, and you are the owner, a Shop Manager, a Shop Sales Manager or a Report Analyzer. See Who can see reports.
Cost tracking. Cost and margin tracking is on under Shop › Features.
Cost access. You are the owner, or a Shop Manager or Shop Product Manager while the owner allows it. See Stock control settings.

A Shop Product Manager has no Reports menu. They open Stock control in the top bar and use its Gross margin tab. Sales managers and report analysts never see costs.

Choose what to show

The date range: Today, 7 days, 30 days, 90 days, This month, Last month, or your own dates of up to one year. The report opens on 30 days. Shops with more than one location also get a location filter.
Download CSV for the grouping you have chosen.
The summary tiles.
Group the table By product, By category or By period (Daily, Weekly, Monthly). By location appears with more than one location.
The table, highest revenue first. Periods are listed by date.

The figures

The tiles total the range. The table has Units sold and the same figures per row, except Revenue without cost.

Figure	Meaning
Revenue	Price charged × quantity, less discounts recorded on the item and less the part refunded. Tax is included when your prices include it. A replacement order of an exchange counts only what was paid on top of the credit
Cost of goods	The cost price the item had when it was sold × the units sold. Units put back on stock from a return are taken off
Gross margin	Revenue of items with a cost price, less their cost of goods
Margin %	Gross margin as a share of that revenue
Sales with a cost price	The share of revenue that had a cost price when sold
Revenue without cost	Revenue of items sold without a cost price. It is left out of the margin, not counted as profit

Only delivered orders placed in the range count, point of sale sales included. Gift card sales and items removed from an order do not. A refund counts against the date of the original order. A damaged return is refunded, but its cost stays in Cost of goods.

Limits

The page shows up to 100 rows, also when grouped by period. The CSV has every row. It adds Revenue without cost and Revenue refunded, and names Sales with a cost price as Cost coverage %.

Messages

You see	Why
"No completed orders in this period."	No delivered order was placed in the range
"… items sold have no cost price (none was set when they were sold)."	Add cost prices to products. Earlier sales stay without one
Cost tracking is off	You opened the report while cost tracking is off: "Turn on "Track cost and margin" to add cost prices to products and see your gross margin. Cost prices recorded before are kept." The owner also gets Turn it on in Settings
"Only people who can see cost prices can open this report."	Your role, or the owner's setting, does not allow costs
