How customers search your products, what they see when nothing matches, and what you can learn from their searches.
Every theme has a search box in the header. Customers type a word and get suggestions at once, then a full results page.
As the customer types, a panel opens with matches grouped as products, collections and suggestions. At the bottom, a link opens every result for the word typed.
The results page works like a category page. Customers can sort and filter the results in the same way. See Category pages and product cards.
| Situation | What the customer reads |
|---|---|
| Results found | Results for "the word", then the product grid |
| Nothing found | No results for "the word", and "Check the spelling or try a more general term." |
| Nothing typed yet | "What are you looking for?" |
When nothing matches, themes can fill the page with popular products and collections to try instead, so the customer has somewhere to go.
Search matches the customer's words against your catalogue. You do not configure it for the website.
Searches on the website are counted in Reports › What customers search for. The report shows popular words and searches that found nothing, which tells you which products or names are missing.

Search result pages are kept out of Google and other search engines. See What search engines get automatically.
