How customers buy a gift card, pay with one at checkout and check a balance.
With gift cards on, customers can buy a card for themselves or someone else, and pay for orders with a card's code.
A gift card is a product on your store with a "Gift card" badge. The customer picks an amount, or types one inside the range you allow, and adds it to the cart.
Gift cards are bought in their own checkout:
The minimum order does not apply to a gift card purchase.
At checkout the customer opens "Have a gift card?", types the "Gift card code" and selects "Apply".
| Customer sees | Meaning |
|---|---|
| "Gift card •••• 1234" with the amount applied | The card is used on this order. Only the last four characters are shown |
| "… left on the card after this order" | The card has more than the order needs |
| "Your gift cards cover this order — nothing else to pay." | No payment method is needed |
| "You can use up to … gift cards on one order." | The limit of cards per order was reached |
A card that does not cover the whole order pays its part, and the customer pays the rest with another method. The order page later shows "Paid with gift cards".
The page at /gift-cards is titled "Check a gift card balance". Anyone with a code can see what is left and when the card expires. Too many attempts are slowed down.
| Message | Meaning |
|---|---|
| "We couldn’t find that gift card. Check the code and try again." | The code is wrong |
| "This gift card has expired." | Past its expiry date |
| "This gift card can no longer be used." | You cancelled the card |
| "This shop doesn’t take gift cards." | Gift cards are off |
Signed-in customers see Gift cards in their account: cards sent to their verified e-mail or phone, marked "Received", and cards they bought, marked "Bought by you". Codes are never shown there; they are only in the message the card arrived in.
