Before you start
You need the Publish permission. Going live needs a published website and the required launch rows done. Turn on Online store in Shop › Features. If you do not see it there, ask support.

The Store status card on Overview decides who can open your website. It is separate from publishing: publishing changes what the site looks like, the status decides who sees it.

Who can open the site
Draft, never published
"Your website is not public yet. Publish it from Customize, then go live."
Nobody
Password protected
"Only people with the password can see your website. Everyone else sees a password page."

Live
"Everyone can see your website. It has no password."

Draft, published before
"Your website is offline. Nobody can open it."

A store suspended by the platform shows "This store was suspended by the platform. Contact support." and no buttons. A user without the Publish permission sees "Only someone who can publish may change whether the store is public."
Go live
Publish first
Publish the website from the editor. The first publish opens the store behind a password page. See Publish.
Finish the launch rows
Complete every row in the yellow notice at the top of Overview. See Launch checklist.
Select the button
Select Remove the password and go live, then confirm "Remove the password? Everyone will be able to see your website." On a site that is offline the button reads Go live.
The panel confirms with "The password is removed. Everyone can see your store now." or "Your store is live." Going live deletes the saved password.
Type a password in Put the website behind a password page. It must be 4 to 72 characters.
Select Show a password page.
The panel answers "Your store now asks visitors for the password." See Password page.
Take the site offline
Select Take it offline and confirm "Take the website offline? Customers will not be able to open it." The status returns to Draft. What you published is kept; go live again, or show a password page, to reopen it.
While you are using the demo store
Loading the demo store sets the website to Live, and publishes it first if it was never published, so you can shop in it like a customer. The card then reads "Everyone can see your website. It has no password." although you have not launched.
Demo checkout offers cash on delivery, and card on delivery where your shop allows it. Other methods answer "This is a demo store — only cash on delivery is available."
The demo is not opened if the store was already live, is suspended, or holds a draft you edited yourself.
Removing the demo data returns the website to the status it had before, unless you changed the status yourself in the meantime.
