How customers log in and create an account on your store, and what they see when no sign-in method works.
Customers sign in with a one-time code sent to their phone, with a password, with Google, or with any mix of these. The login page offers only the methods that can work for your shop right now.
| Your set-up | The customer sees |
|---|---|
| Phone code, and a code can be sent | "Enter your mobile number and we will text you a one-time code." |
| Password | "Mobile number or email" and "Password", with "Forgot password?" |
| Both | "How do you want to log in?" with two tabs, "Code" and "Password" |
| Google on | "Continue with Google", below the other methods |
| Nothing usable | "Sign-in isn't available right now" and "This shop has no way to sign you in at the moment. Please try again later." With guest checkout on, also "You can still check out as a guest." |
A customer who signs in by code for the first time is welcomed with "What should we call you?" and can add a name.
After choosing a Google account, a new customer is asked for a mobile number once: "Almost there — add your mobile number to finish signing in with Google. We will text you a code."
| Customer reads | Cause |
|---|---|
| "An account already uses this e-mail. Sign in with your phone number instead." | The e-mail belongs to an existing account that is not linked to Google |
| "Verify your Google e-mail address first, or use your phone number." | The Google account's e-mail is not verified |
The phone step sends a code, so it needs SMS or WhatsApp codes to work.
With password sign-in on, the login page links to "Create an account". The form asks for full name, mobile number, e-mail and a password.
When phone verification is required, sign-up ends with "Confirm your number" and a code.
| Customer reads | Cause |
|---|---|
| "This shop isn't accepting new accounts." | Customer registration is closed |
| "Your account was created and is waiting for the shop to approve it. You can log in once it is approved." | Customer approval is on |
| "This number already has an account. Log in with a code, or reset your password." | The phone number is already registered |
"Forgot password?" asks for the mobile number or e-mail and sends a code. The customer enters the code and a new password.
If your shop cannot send codes to phones, a customer who types a phone number reads "This shop cannot send codes to phones. Enter the email on your account instead, or contact the shop."
