Choose the weight and size units, set a fallback weight, and give products the weights that weight-based rates and courier bookings use.

Before you start
Shipping must be enabled for your shop. Turn on Courier shipping in Shop › Features. If you do not see it there, ask support.

Who can use this
Shop owner
Product weights, the default weight and weight-based rates are all stored in one unit: your shop's Weight Unit. Checkout weighs the cart in that unit and converts nothing, so choose it before you enter weights.
Set the units
Open Shop › Settings › Delivery Settings and find Units under the Shipping heading.

Field
Options
What it does
1
Weight Unit
Kilograms (kg), Grams (g), Pounds (lb)
Unit for product weights, the default weight, weight slabs and weight limits of rates
2
Dimension Unit
Centimetres (cm), Inches (in)
Unit for product length, width and height
3
Default Product Weight
A number of 0 or more, or blank
Weight used when a product has none. Blank means 0
Save the settings. The first save also ticks "Choose the weight unit" on the setup checklist.
Changing the weight unit later
If products or rates already have weights, changing Weight Unit shows Existing weights. You must pick one before saving:
Choice
Result
Convert my product weights and rate slabs to the new unit (e.g. 0.5 kg → 500 g)
Product weights, the default weight, weight slabs, "each extra" steps and min/max weights of rates are recalculated
Keep the numbers as they are (they are already in the new unit)
Nothing is recalculated. The stored numbers are read in the new unit, so shipping prices change if they were entered in the old one
A confirmation appears before the save goes through.
Give products a weight
Product form. Open a product from the Catalogue menu and find the Shipping card. The card shows once Delivery Area is By Shipping Zones, or when the product already has shipping values.

Notes
Weight (kg)
The label shows your weight unit
Length (cm), Width (cm), Height (cm)
Optional. The label shows your dimension unit
Requires shipping
Switch off for digital items and services. They are left out of the cart weight
Customers do not see these values.
Variants. On a product with variants, the card holds the defaults. Each variant has its own Weight (kg), size fields and Ships choice; leave them blank to use the product's values.
Bulk edit. The bulk edit page has a Weight (kg) field for each product.
CSV import. The import page lists Optional shipping columns: weight, length, width, height, requires_shipping and hsn_code. Weight and sizes are numbers in your shop's units. requires_shipping is 1 or 0. An empty cell leaves the saved value unchanged.
Products without a weight
The zones page warns when products have no weight: they "ship at the default weight". With no default weight set they are weighed as 0, and weight-based rates charge too little. Either set weights on every product or set Default Product Weight.
Troubleshooting
"Default Product Weight must be a number of 0 or more (e.g. 0.5), or blank." Enter digits only, without the unit.
"Your products or shipping rates already have weights in kg. Choose whether to convert them to g or keep the numbers as they are." Pick one of the two Existing weights choices, then save again.
"Converting to g would make the heaviest product weight too large to store." Choose Keep the numbers as they are or another unit.
