How the editor saves your work, what the save status means, and the keyboard shortcuts.
Everything you do in the editor changes a draft. The top bar always shows the theme's name followed by "Draft". Only the preview shows the draft; customers keep seeing the published website.
From the editor, the live website changes in three ways only: Publish, a scheduled publish, or publishing an earlier version again from version history.
One exception: a section's visibility schedule, once published, takes effect at its set time by itself. See Section visibility.
There is one draft per store. Everyone who opens the editor works on the same one. See Working with others.
The draft saves by itself after each change. The save status in the top bar tells you where you are.
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Saved | The draft is stored |
| Saving… | A save is running |
| Unsaved | You made a change that has not been saved yet |
| Not saved | The save failed, or a setting needs attention first |
| Conflict | The draft was saved somewhere else in the meantime. Saving stops until you choose what to keep |
Select the status to save at once. While it reads Unsaved its tooltip is Save now (⌘S / Ctrl+S).
If a save cannot reach the server, the editor shows "Connection problem — retrying…" and tries again by itself. If you close the tab with unsaved changes, the browser asks you to confirm.
Every edit is one step: a changed setting, a moved section, a theme switch, a restored version, a change applied by the Assistant. The Undo and Redo arrows in the top bar step through them. If the edit was on another page, the editor switches to that page.
Undo covers the edits of your current visit; loading someone else's draft with Discard mine clears it. To go back further, restore a published version. See Version history in the editor.
Unsaved changes are also kept in your browser, per store, for up to 7 days. If the editor closed before saving, the next visit offers them back:
| Banner | Buttons |
|---|---|
| "Unsaved changes from … were found on this device." | Restore changes or Discard |
| "…but the draft has been saved elsewhere since. Restoring replaces that newer draft (you can undo)." | Restore anyway or Discard |
A store can save a draft of up to 1,000 KB. From 70% a badge such as "72% full" appears in the top bar; it turns red at 95%. "Remove unused sections or long texts to make room."
| Keys | Action |
|---|---|
| ⌘S / Ctrl+S | Save now |
| ⌘Z / Ctrl+Z | Undo |
| ⌘Shift+Z / Ctrl+Shift+Z, or Ctrl+Y | Redo |
| ← →, Home, End | Move between the sidebar tabs, when one has focus |
| Alt+↑ / Alt+↓ | Move a menu item |
| Alt+→ / Alt+← | Nest a menu item or move it out |
| Enter, Delete or Backspace | Edit or remove the focused menu item |
| ⌘K / Ctrl+K | Add a link in rich text |
| Enter | Send a request to the Assistant. Shift+Enter starts a new line |
Sections and blocks can also be reordered from the keyboard with their drag handles.
