Make a second layout, for example a landing-page product, and assign it to chosen items.
An alternate template is "A copy of the page layout you can change on its own — for example a landing-page product or an About page." Products, categories and content pages can have them. Other pages cannot.
It takes three steps: create it in the editor, publish, then assign it in the panel.
In the editor's top bar, select New template beside the page picker.
product.landing.Select Create. The template starts as a copy of the standard layout as it is in your draft now. It appears in the page picker as "Product · landing".
Pick it in the page picker and arrange its sections as on any page. Then publish. Only templates in the published website can be assigned.
Open the item's edit form and choose the template under Online store template, then save the form.
| Item | Where the field is |
|---|---|
| Product | The product's SEO tab |
| Category | The category's edit form |
| Content page | The page's edit form, under Shop › Pages |
Default template means the standard layout. Alternates are listed as product.landing, collection.gift-guide and so on.
Until an alternate exists in the published website, the field says "The published theme has no alternate templates for this page type yet. Create one in the design studio (Customize), publish it, then choose it here."
On Product, Collection and Page, a badge tells you which template the previewed item really uses on your store.
| Badge | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Uses “…” | You are on the standard page, but this item is assigned an alternate. The preview shows that one. Select the badge to edit it |
| Assigned | You are on an alternate template and the previewed item uses it |
| Not assigned | You are on an alternate template that the previewed item does not use. The tooltip says where to assign it |
With the alternate template selected in the page picker, select Delete template. A notice offers Undo: "Deleted the “…” template. Products still assigned to it show the … template." Categories and pages assigned to a deleted template fall back to their standard template in the same way, once you publish.
In the panel, an item still assigned to a deleted template shows the choice as "… — not in the published theme, the default is shown".
| Message | Meaning |
|---|---|
| "Give the template a name (letters and numbers)." | The name is empty |
| "Use letters, numbers and dashes." | The name has other characters |
| "A “landing” product template already exists." | Pick another name |
An alternate template has its own Page SEO with one switch.
