How pay-on-delivery methods, the COD fee, your COD limits and the confirmation code appear to customers.
Cash on delivery and card on delivery are listed in the Payment step like any other method. The customer selects one and then "Place order". Nothing is paid online.
To change this: Cash on delivery and Card on delivery.
A shipping rate can carry a fee for cash on delivery.
| Where | Customer sees |
|---|---|
| The shipping option | "COD fee" and the amount |
| The order summary | A "Cash on delivery fee" row, or the note "Includes … cash on delivery fee" |
The fee applies only when the customer pays on delivery with that rate.
To change this: the rate's COD fee. See Shipping rates.
With your cash on delivery controls on, a method that is not allowed for this order stays in the list, greyed out, with a sentence under it.
| Reason | What the customer is told |
|---|---|
| Order below your minimum or above your maximum | The limit, for example that cash on delivery is available for orders up to an amount |
| Any other rule, such as the blocklist or the customer's history | Only that cash on delivery isn't available for this order. The reason is deliberately not given |
| The location or pickup store serving the order does not take cash on delivery | "Cash on delivery isn't available from this store. Please choose another payment method." |
The limit is checked on what would be collected at the door: the total after any wallet amount.
A customer whom your shop does not take online orders from is told so and cannot place the order.
To change this: COD & risk: limits for cash on delivery, COD blocklist and Cash on delivery by location.
When your rules ask for a code, a customer who selects a pay-on-delivery method sees "Confirm your phone to pay on delivery".
The customer selects "Send code". The code goes to the phone number of the checkout.
The order is placed with the code. A wrong or expired code is refused and the customer can ask for a new one after a short wait.
The box also reads "Or choose an online payment method — no code needed."
A correct code is remembered for a short time, so a customer who has to place the order again does not need a new one. One code is good for one order.
Guest checkout has its own phone check. With Allow Pay On Delivery Without OTP on, a guest paying cash skips that check. See Contact details and guest checkout.
