While the status is Password protected, visitors see a password page. Anyone who types the password sees the website. Use it to show the store to a partner or to test it yourself before launch.
Where the password comes from
The first time you publish from the editor, the store opens behind a password page. If you saved a password beforehand, that one is used. Otherwise one is made for you. The editor tells you: "Your store is now a password-protected preview. Share the password to show it; the public sees the password page until you go live."
Find the password
Open Shop › Online Store. On the Store status card, Current password: shows it. Select Copy to copy it.

The status becomes Password protected
On an offline site that already has a password, you can leave the field blank to reopen it with the saved one.
The Password page card in Preferences
Preferences has a Password page card with one field, Password. Its placeholder is "•••• saved — type a new one to change it" when a password exists and "Not set" when none does. It saves with Save preferences.
Removing the password
There is no separate remove button. Going live removes it: select Remove the password and go live. After that the card in Preferences shows "Not set" again. To use a password page later, type a new one.
Error messages: "Set the password visitors will have to enter." and "The password must be 4 to 72 characters."
